THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL WILL BE HELD FROM 24TH AUGUST – 1ST SEPTEMBER.
In 2021, SERET Germany will be celebrating its 6th anniversary and its second time as a Hybrid Festival.
For those who wish to enjoy films on the big screen, our movies will be available across selected cinemas in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. Some of the films will be screened in open air cinemas.
You will also be able to access our entire selection and watch films through our online platform, with a wide range of price options to choose from.
Our opening night film will be “Sublet”, directed by the international acclaimed director Eytan Fox.
The movie’s leading character who is 56 years old, explores the widening gap between gay men of his generation and those who are in their 20s. The plot takes place on the background of the beautiful and lively Tel Aviv, unveiling aspects of the city rarely seen by tourists, while highlighting the chaos and stillness coexisting within it.
Sublet is a wonderful addition to Eytan Fox’s vast and successful body of work. We have decided to bring one of Eytan’s best films from previous year – Walk on Water. The film won multiple prizes and is as relevant today as it was many year ago.
Another highlight of this year’s festival will be SHORT RIDES, a unique selection of short films. These engaging, uncompromising and sensitive movies were directed by both emerging and established filmmakers. The films highlight the human experience which is very private but at the same time shared by all: our sense of responsibility for each other in a moment of crisis, the ability to hold on to common sense even when the world around stopped.
Finally, we are happy to announce that this year we will be collaborating for the first time with the Jewish Film Festival Berlin Brandenburg and the Jewish Museum. We developed together, a unique full day program focused on ‘behind the scenes’ of orthodox life in films and TV series. Our special focus is Ultra-Orthodox female cinema, that manages to produce a bold and even subversive voice within the strict boundaries dictated by the Jewish religion.
